'We need a miracle:' Thousands gather for prayer vigil for Karns City QB who collapsed during game

It was an emotional scene Sunday evening as thousands came out to support Karns City quarterback Mason Martin, who was hospitalized Friday after collapsing during the Gremlins’ game against Redbank Valley.

Martin's friends, family and classmates found strength in numbers, as they packed the bleachers and came together to offer hope and comfort, but most of all prayers, for their quarterback as he continues to heal.

The Karns City community applauded the high school football team as they walked onto the field, hand-in-hand, standing in solidarity during a time of uncertainty for one of their own.

The prayer vigil was held on the very field where the senior collapsed Friday night, with his jersey on display.

“We gather here today to pray for a miracle,” said Pastor Pete Sapp.

Martin collapsed during the third quarter of the school's home game against Redbank Valley Friday night.

His teammates and opposing players immediately took a knee and began quietly praying.

Martin was quickly airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital where he's still recovering.

Superintendent Eric Ritzert says Martin’s parents haven't left their son's bedside.

“This is a very serious situation and that's why as a community we want to be there to support them.

And while we don't know the extent of his injuries or what led to his collapse, Martin's parents stated in a Facebook post that there is swelling around his brain.

They went on to thank the community for their love and support, saying in part, “Mason remains in critical condition with little change over the last 36 hours. The truth is, we need a miracle.”

Martin's fight comes as his mother continues her own personal battle with cancer.

“The Martins have had more than their fair share of brokenness,” Pastor Sapp added.

Teammate Tate Beighley read his good friend's favorite bible verse during the vigil, offering words of comfort.

“Please keep your thoughts and prayers with the Martin family. Mason is a fighter and I promise you he will win this battle," Beighley said.

Counselors were on hand at the vigil and the school superintendent says that they'll also be available for students and staff in the district starting Tuesday.
